WHAT WE DO

OUR STORY

The Sauna Project began in the summer of 2022, when friends David Seidel, Keelan Kanji, and Luke Mexted built a wood-fired sauna in the driveway of their flat, just off the beach in Mt Maunganui, New Zealand. What started as a passion project quickly turned into something much bigger. As they invited friends and family to share in the experience, it became clear just how much calm, connection, and joy the sauna brought to those who stepped inside.

In late 2024, Chris and Georgia stumbled upon The Sauna Project while travelling through New Zealand. They instantly fell in love—with the concept, the craftsmanship, the community it fostered, and the incredible people behind it. Inspired and energised, they made the decision to bring The Sauna Project to Sydney.

In June 2024, The Sauna Project Sydney opened its doors at Vaucluse Beach Paddock. Since then, it’s become a space for locals and visitors alike to slow down, reconnect, and enjoy the magic of sauna-ing in nature.

WHY SAUNA?

Saunas offer us a chance to complete the stress cycle that begins when we experience stress, be that physical, mental, emotional, or spiritual. Stressors wind up our brain and body, storing energy and influencing our state of mind and being. Without a proper outlet, this energy can linger, leading to tension, fatigue, and burnout. The heat and ritual of the sauna provide a safe space to release that built-up energy — through sweat, stillness, and intentional breath. In this environment, the nervous system is given permission to soften, recalibrate, and restore balance. Saunas not only soothe the body, but also allow the mind to slow down, offering clarity, calm, and a sense of completeness.

Word on the street…

  • “The Sauna Project has become a weekly ritual. We are so lucky to park up at the beach, watch the waves while cooking inside then cool off with an ocean swim. Thanks for bringing this to the Mount!”

    Matthew B.

  • “The Sauna Project fully captures what Scandinavian sauna culture means to me; from the smell of burning wood to the reverence for an ancient ritual that not only heals but brings people together. I feel truly grateful to have this accessible to me on a weekly basis in my local community, for my mental and physical health.”

    Cecilie C.

  • "The sauna is incredible, so beautifully built. You’re in this amazing space with beautiful windows, great smelling wood, the natural heat and stoking of the fire. All you have to do is sit, relax, get into the body and let the sauna do the work. I’m desperate for The Sauna Project to bring one down south!”
